Preface

A small house with a long attention span.

TIMOTHY & RACHAEL PUBLISHING LIMITED exists to commission, edit, design, and bring to market works that deserve more than a hurried upload. From Suite G04 at 1 Quality Court, Chancery Lane, we operate in the legal-literary heart of London — close to chambers, libraries, and the conversations that still shape serious reading.

We publish across selected non-fiction, professional, and literary-adjacent lists. The list is curated on purpose. A crowded catalogue is not a virtue; a coherent one is. Every title receives editorial scrutiny, production standards we can defend, and a route to readers that matches the book’s actual audience — not a fantasy market.

The house is independent. Decisions about acquisition, design, and timing are made here, with authors treated as collaborators rather than content suppliers. We prefer fewer books, better made.

Chapter I

Our lists — three pillars, carefully tended.

A

Argument & ideas

Serious non-fiction for readers who want clarity without condescension: culture, society, technology’s human consequences, and essays that earn their length. We look for a distinct thesis, evidence handled honestly, and prose that can be read aloud without embarrassment.

  • Proposal-led acquisitions with sample chapters
  • Developmental editing that strengthens structure
  • Notes and apparatus when scholarship requires them
  • Design that signals substance without costume drama
B

Profession & practice

Guides and reference works for practitioners — law-adjacent literacy, creative industries craft, and professional learning that respects the reader’s time. These books must be usable on a Tuesday afternoon, not merely impressive on a shelf.

  • Expert authors with teaching instincts
  • Checklists, frameworks, and worked examples
  • Edition planning for fields that move
  • Formats suited to desk and digital reference
C

Voice & narrative

Select literary and narrative projects: memoir with craft, short fiction collections when the voice is undeniable, and hybrid forms that sit between essay and story. We do not chase trends; we recognise stamina.

  • Line editing that protects cadence
  • Cover and typography as quiet drama
  • Launch plans sized to the book’s true circle
  • Long-tail availability, not a two-week flash

Chapter II

How a manuscript becomes a book here.

verso

Acquire

We read for argument, audience, and endurance. A proposal should say what the book is, who it is for, and why now — without burying the lead in biography.

recto

Edit

Structural notes first, line work second. Authors receive reasoned queries, not unexplained track-changes storms. The goal is a stronger book, not a louder editor.

verso

Design & produce

Type, paper (or screen), margins, and binding choices serve reading. We proof carefully. Indexes and apparatus are planned when the text needs them — not bolted on in panic.

recto

Publish & steward

Publication day is a beginning. Metadata, retailer pathways, review copies, and author-facing support continue after the applause emoji fades.

verso

Rights & editions

Where appropriate we discuss serial, translation, and audio possibilities with clear terms. Second editions are earned by demand and necessary updates — not vanity.

recto

House manners

Deadlines are real; courtesy is not optional. We answer mail, keep contracts readable, and tell the truth about timelines even when the truth is inconvenient.

Chapter III

Chapter IV

What authors can expect from the house.

An editor who reads the whole
Not a checklist bot. Notes address structure, clarity, fairness to sources, and the experience of the reader you claimed to serve.
Production without mystery
Schedules, proof stages, and design rationales are shared. You will know where the manuscript sits in the pipeline.
Design that respects the text
Covers and interiors are argued for — not decorated by trend. The book should look like itself.
Contracts in plain English
Territory, formats, royalties, and reversion terms explained without theatre. Questions are welcome before signature.
A launch sized to reality
We do not promise bestseller mythology. We build a credible path to the readers who already need this book.
Long-term stewardship
Backlist is not landfill. We keep titles available and discuss reprints or revisions when the work still earns its keep.

Chapter V

Submission statutes — please read before you send.

  1. §1 Scope

We accept proposals aligned to Argument & ideas, Profession & practice, and Voice & narrative. Unsolicited full manuscripts may be declined unread if no proposal precedes them.

  2. §2 Materials

Include a one-page overview, audience note, chapter outline, sample (up to 5,000 words), and a short author biography focused on why you are the person to write this book.

  3. §3 Simultaneous submissions

Allowed if disclosed. If another house makes an offer, tell us promptly so we can respond with courtesy rather than surprise.

  4. §4 Response time

We aim to reply within six weeks. Silence beyond that window entitles you to nudge us once at einfo@timothy-rachael.online.

  5. §5 What we rarely take

Trend-chasing tie-ins, unedited AI-draft dumps, and proposals that cannot name a reader more specific than “everyone.”

  6. §6 How to address us

Email the submission desk or use the colophon form. Subject lines that name the list pillar help us route reading.

Marginalia

Notes from people who have worked with the house.

“They cut three chapters I loved — and the book became the one I meant to write.”

— Non-fiction author, Argument list

“Deadlines were firm, notes were kind, and the contract did not require a translator.”

— Practitioner author, Profession list

“The cover meeting was about the text, not about who had the loudest moodboard.”

— Narrative author, Voice list

Colophon

The house, the court, the post.
